This year, IU\u2019s international community marks a milestone with the opening of the Wingdings Cultural Center. Since gaining recognition in 1990 on the Microsoft Windows 3.1 OS, people of Wingding descent have become highly valued members of IU\u2019s foreign language program and the international community. \u201cThe journey has been long and arduous,\u201d said Dr. \uf068\uf069\uf074\uf048\uf065\uf061\uf064, professor of Wingdings language and culture. \u201cBut as the old Wingdings saying goes: \u2018\uf053\uf075\uf063\uf06b\uf06d\uf079\uf064\uf069 \uf063\uf06b\uf020 \uf079\uf06f\uf075\uf020 \uf073\uf06f\uf06e\uf020 \uf06f\uf066\uf061 \uf020\uf062\uf069\uf074\uf063\uf068.\u2019\u201d Influential persons of Wingdings origin attended the inaugural ceremony, including \uf054\uf069\uf06c\uf061\uf020 \uf054\uf065\uf071\uf075\uf069\uf06c\uf06c\uf061, \uf04b\uf068\uf061\uf06c\uf020 \uf044\uf072\uf06f\uf067\uf06f and Dwayne \u201cThe Rock\u201d Johnson. Wingdings\u2019 contributions to society such as luge, the cotton gin and the Enigma Machine have deeply affected the modern world. The new on-campus facilities were made possible by a donation by the \uf04e\uf061\uf07a\uf069Enigma Machine Corporation. The Wingdings font and people existed long before the technological revolution. It\u2019s a little known fact that the first draft of the Magna Carta was written in Wingdings, along with the text outlining the 1673 Treaty of Ghent. In addition, in a 1976 game versus Iowa State, IU kicker David \u201cPink\u201d Freud had the name on the back of his jersey written in Wingdings, as a show of solidarity with the often ostracized community. He then missed the game-winning field goal. Despite progress made on the IU campus, the people of the Wingdings society continue their fight for legitimacy. Today, their traditional font remains unrecognized by both the Apple and Linux operating systems. \u201cWingdings is a joke!\u201d remarked an anonymous Apple employee. \u201cLiterally nobody uses it. It is a fake language used to supplement the characters of a QWERTY keyboard. And who are these people who are calling themselves Wingdings anyways?!\u201d The Wingdings Society was hurt by those comments. \u201cWhile we are saddened by the remarks of Apple staff,\u201d stated Dr. \uf068\uf069\uf074\uf048\uf065\uf061\uf064, \u201cwe nonetheless extend to them our hands in friendship.\uf046\uf075\uf063\uf06b you Apple, you can \uf073\uf075\uf063\uf06b my \uf064\uf069\uf063\uf06b.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
